Dunbar-Ortiz’s Loaded & America as a Corporate Enterprise

Editor’s note: as part of a massive project to turn ninaillingworth.com into a central hub for all of my writing (and at least partially in response to ongoing censorship of my work by billion dollar tech companies,) I’m spending parts of this month cross-posting older material from other platforms. My apologies if this produces an unwanted notification in your inbox; there’s apparently no way to turn it off.

A Proto-Corporate Nation Founded on Slavery & Genocide

Every once in a while, you’ll come across a book that helps you crystalize in your mind, the connections between multiple horror-show aspects of the war against capitalism all at once; in my life, Roxanne Dubar-Ortiz‘s short but powerful “Loaded: A Disarming History of the Second Amendment” and upon further reading, her amazing “An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States” turned out to be exactly those foundational kinds of books. Drawing on numerous original documentary sources, Dunbar-Ortiz manages to explain why it’s utterly impossible to separate capitalism, guns, white supremacy and violence against the other from the American ideological core. Namely because the United States didn’t really start out as a traditional country at all, but rather a series of public-private partnerships with the British Crown, in the business of land speculation (read: war) and exploiting labor (see: slavery.) America would later then re-organize from thirteen colony “companies” into a nation, to escape regulation of their business model (genocide and slavery) by that same British Crown.
