The Library

In the spring of 2018, I found myself at something of an existential crossroads in my life. Although it is certainly true that I was going through a number of personal and family struggles, I would be lying if I denied that watching the world descend into open fascism after I’d spent so much time and energy warning people about that same result, wore me down to a broken, emotional nub. Regardless of the reasons, this low period of my life lead me to take a several months long and still ongoing, involuntary hiatus from writing. In the time I’ve spent away, I’ve been doing a tremendous amount of reading and as such, I’ve undertaken a massive project to rebuild my personal library. What started out as roughly fifty left-leaning books has now grown to several massive shelves holding well over two-hundred volumes on a variety of subjects that relate to socialist politics, theory and activism.

Originally I had placed all the books together in one massive list but as time has gone forward, I’ve managed to collect enough material to make that unwieldy and inconvenient. As a result I’ve now reorganized this page into a jump off point for sections of The Library; the books are sorted first by subject matter, then within each individual subcategory they are sorted alphabetically by author. Each book is listed only once, in the most appropriate category and each listing contains links to a summary and a book review written by someone other than me – after all, you probably don’t need me to tell you I think highly of the books I’ve already bought. Each listing also contains a space to link to any writing I might happen to do about the book under the title “Margin Notes.” While I haven’t actually written any of the Margin Notes sections yet, I’ve been collecting material for the project pretty much the entire time I haven’t be writing. Hopefully, we’ll start publishing some articles about the books in my library soon.
