Blog: the Panopticon, Public Trust, and “Fake News”

Editor’s note: after struggling against online censorship and some procrastinating, I’m getting around to reorganizing my website. As part of that process, I’m posting links to older content that I will never find again otherwise.

This activity is tedious, but necessary for my archives. Please bear with me in the meantime and thanks for all your support.

The Propaganda Coma

Originally published on September 29th, 2019, I wrote this Quickshot Quotations blog post on Can’t You Read literally in the middle of reading Edward Snowden’s fascinating biography, Permanent Record. While I would ultimately go on to review the book (and the ongoing amnesia campaign used to smear Snowden) in a later post, in this blog I tried to work through what Snowden’s important and heroic revelations mean for those who manipulate public opinion in the ongoing culture war. Huge portions of the ruling establishment decry the public’s belief in fake news, but nobody ever talks about what creating a culture of deception does to the public discourse.

Ultimately, I would talk more about that subject in a rather lengthy essay about the ways corporate media has helped mainstream white nationalist conspiracy theories, but at this point the ideas were far more embryonic inside my noodle.

“Sure the government lies to obscure its mass surveillance program, and sure the media lies to protect the government, and Wall Street lies to run rigged roulette games backed by your pension money and everyone knows the big companies lie to sell their products, but has anyone ever thought about what happens to the public and its discourse when all of this is happening at the same time? Has anyone considered how this routine and foundational violation of trust might affect the average person’s outlook towards their government, societal institutions and even each other – particularly when this constant, mind-boggling violation of trust is occurring in the middle of a fake “Culture War” with all too real casualties?”
