Author’s note: normally I would include informal journal writing like this in a grouped edition of The Skinny. Unfortunately due to the fact that I’ve recently been ill, and it’s thrown off my writing schedule, I’ve run out of time to wait for more posts to add to it.

How to Lose in High Definition

Most people in the media seem to think the unspoken secret about Trump’s second impeachment trial is that due to Republican partisanship, he will not be convicted. While that is certainly true, and indeed, morally outrageous, the real hidden truth in the Trump impeachment proceedings is its ultimate purpose; to transform American fascism into something Trump did that one time, but nobody else is responsible for. This is, to put it politely, complete and utter bunk that will merrily lead us all into another fascist coup attempt in due course; and that’s why no matter what happens later today when the Senate votes, people who don’t love American fascism, have already lost.

“The liberal establishment has made a choice to make Trump (who is again, clearly guilty of inciting an insurrection attempt, among other crimes) a singular scapegoat for the larger fascist thread in our society; a thread that ultimately made the Trump presidency possible in the first place. They’ve made that choice not only because they lack the courage, conviction, and desire to engage in proper antifascism, but also because they really do want to get this over with and go back to fucking over poor people over six martini lunches with their shitheel fascist friends “across the aisle” and I’m sorry, as much as nobody who owns a West Wing boxed set wants to hear this, people can smell the bullshit in that position.”
