Film Sessions: Digging Up Roots on Media Madness

Editor’s note: welcome back to Film Sessions; our quasi-regular feature on Media Madness in which I share, analyze and expand on a relevant video created by someone on the left wing of YouTube.

Cracking the Snow Globe

After a short hiatus our popular Film Sessions feature is back, and we’re picking up right where we left off in the month of December. In this edition, I’m sharing and unpacking a twenty-seven minute video on the concept of whiteness as understood through critical race analysis, by What the Theory’s Tom Nicholas. What is whiteness? Where did it come from? Why do most white people struggle to even conceptualize themselves through the lens of race? And most importantly, how can we use recognizing the existence of whiteness, to dismantle the white supremacy necessary for the function of the capitalist order? Join me as we explore these issues with the help of scholars like Charles W. MillsPeggy McIntoshSara Ahmed, and W.E.B. Du Bois, as well as another excellent video essay by a left wing YouTube creator, over on Media Madness.

Bonus content: a fellow by the name of Emerican Johnson over at the anarcho-communist channel NonCompete was kind enough to mention my writing on American Fascism in a video about the merits of systemic analysis; so I included a link to that video and a thank you note at the bottom of this post.

“While the term itself may elicit some nervous giggles, the simple truth is that for a white person, understanding the mental state of “whiteness” is a foundational precursor for discovering a wholly racialized world, necessary for the continued function of primitive capitalist accumulation; a world that has previously been hidden from them by an insidious type of normalized social propaganda about, well, class, capitalism, and racism in the Pig Empire.”
