The Skinny: Vote Pledging, Untrustworthy Media, and the Urgency of Climate Catastrophe

Editor’s note: as part of a project to turn ninaillingworth.com into a central hub for all of my writing (thanks to ongoing censorship of my work by giant tech companies) I’m spending the next little while cross-posting older material from other platforms.

The September Skinny: All Mixed Up

As I’ve mentioned in previous reposts here on ninaillingworth.com, the most frustrating thing about these early editions of The Skinny is how all over the place they are; and in particular, how often I switch from covering current events, to covering theoretical concepts. In this September 2019 post for example, I talk about democratic socialist voting strategy during Democratic Party primary season, statistical evidence of declining trust in corporate media, and why capitalism’s solution to climate catastrophe is clearly to let billions of poor people die.

While I certainly feel the note about why its a dumb idea to pledge your vote to neoliberal sh*theels trying to cheat you out of democratic representation is still relevant, and the observations about declining trust in media would find its way into one of my better Media Theory articles at a later date – they both feel really out of place alongside the much more important climate and capitalism essay here. Live and learn, I suppose; but for these older editions of The Skinny it’s too late to change them now.

“Brass tacks time here – if your plan to fight impending climate catastrophe involves infinite economic growth, the profit motive and partnering with the private energy sector (or worse, the fossil fuel industry) to solve the climate catastrophe problem, then your plan is naive and worthless – full stop.
We are talking about an industry that has known about the very real danger of burning fossil fuels for over fifty years and has spent the last forty of them hiring public relations mercenaries and fake scientists to deny the existence of a problem; putting the entire human species in peril for profit. These folks have demonstrably known they were slowly killing us all for decades and not only did nothing, but actively concealed that knowledge from everyone – many of their leaders belong in prison not at the negotiating table for a New Green energy market.”
